A lot of English learners tell me that they take trouble with the question, "Do you mind…." It'southward a bit of a complicated question to ask and answer, partly considering of the meaning of the word mind. As a verb, mind means to be bothered or to be upset past something. Look at this sentence:

  • I mind people smoking in a eating place.

It means, I am bothered by or upset by people smoking in a restaurant. For today'due south English lesson, I am going to show you the two ways we employ Do you lot mind…, a very common question in English language conversation.

Asking someone to exercise something for you
First of all, you can utilize Exercise y'all mind + VerbING (gerund) when yous want to ask someone to practice something for you. In this case, Do you mind means Do yous take any trouble… (or) Does it bother you to…

  • Do you mind closing the window?
  • Practice you mind helping me with my homework?
  • Do you listen smoking somewhere else?

Asking permission
On the other manus, when y'all want to exercise the action, or yous desire a 3rd person to do the action, you lot can exercise it this manner:

  • Do you lot mind me endmost the window?
  • Do you mind Jack helping me with my homework?
  • Do you lot mind us leaving the party early tonight.

You can also employ Exercise you mind if + sentence.

  • Do yous listen if I sit here?
  • Practise you lot mind if I close the window?
  • Do you heed if I smoke here?

Annotation that we generally do not say "Do yous mind you…" or "Practice you lot mind if yous…" For example, these sentences are not natural:

  • Do you mind you smoking somewhere else?
  • Do you mind if yous fume somewhere else?

Then how do you reply these questions? Remember that Do you listen means Do yous take whatsoever problem, so how you answer depends on the situation.

State of affairs #1. Someone asks if they tin can sit at your table and yous think information technology is not a problem. You are OK if they sit at the same tabular array. Y'all can answer like this:

  • Question: Do you lot mind if I sit down here?
  • Answer: No, I don't mind. Please take a seat. (or) No, I don't listen. (or) No, get ahead.

In full general, when someone asks Exercise you mind and you do not mind, the usual respond is "No, I don't mind" or "No, go ahead." Here are some more than examples:

  • Question: Do yous mind if I open the window?
  • Answer: No, not at all. Please do so.
  • Question: Do yous mind if I turn on the TV?
  • Answer: No, go alee.
  • Question: Practice y'all mind if I leave work early today?
  • Reply: No, not at all.

Situation #2. Someone asks if they can sit at your tabular array, merely you think it is a problem. You are not OK if they sit at the same table. You tin can respond similar this:

  • Question: Practice y'all listen if I sit here?
  • Reply: I'm lamentable, this seat is taken. (or) I'one thousand lamentable, I'chiliad waiting for someone.

Then, when someone asks Exercise you mind and you practise mind, the usual answer is "I'm deplorable, but…" and then say the reason why it is a problem. Here are some more examples:

  • Question: Practise you listen if I open the window?
  • Answer: I'thou distressing. I feel cold, so please don't
  • Question: Exercise y'all mind if I turn on the TV?
  • Reply: I'm sorry. I'm studying right now.
  • Question: Do you mind if I leave piece of work early today?
  • Reply: I'grand lamentable. We're as well busy today.

Past the way, we tin say, "Exercise you mind?" with upward intonation to show someone that they are annoying or bothering us. In this style, "Do you listen?" means, "Yous are abrasive me" or "I want you to leave me lonely."
